Land o Fakes

Land o Fakes

While searching through interesting photos on the internet I stumbled across this image of the famous Land of Lakes butter. Clearly this image is using cultural appropriation and making fun of the Indian and American Population in a way. I thought that this image was really funny because everyone know what it is suppose to say on the label but it clearly does not as it says fakes instead of lakes. Also on the bottom of this image there is the word Bitter written across which could be referring to bitter butter but most likely that native Americans are bitter about Americans and us taking over America. It also has a native American man praying kneeling down and it looks like with an American Flag wrapped around him. Clearly this is showing how the American way has overtaken the native American way in this image and that is why it says Land o Fakes because it is portraying as Americans as fake people or bad people for taking the land. Also using Bitter, on the bottom is clearly giving that impression that most native American people are still bitter about what has happened in our history so they are using this famous label of butter that everyone knows about to get back at us. As this image is clearly meant to give the audience a laugh at the same time it has a bit of seriousness to it about the past of America. Originally before this class I would have probably just looked right over this image and not payed close attention to it and the underlying meaning it has but now from taking Art 100 I am able to see a deeper understanding of what images like these can mean and how powerful words can be when displayed with a powerful image.

“New Releases”

Here is an image I stumbled upon while searching the web.  I knew right from the beginning that I wanted to talk about the representation of the image.  The representation of the image refers to the use of language and images to create meaning.  Roland Barthes rhetoric of the denotational and connotational message helps explain the image from my interpretation.  The denotation of the image consists of an empty room with bare white shelves.  There is a sign above the shelves that is vibrant with the words ‘New Releases’.  On the floor of the room are some sorts of DVDs or VHSs.  The connotative meaning of this image is significant in the sense that this room once was a thriving business back when going to stores like Blockbuster was the fad.  Now that times are more progressive and technology has taken a grip on society, stores like these become vacant and a past time.  The text in the image addresses the once popular trip of going to the ‘New Releases’ section in a store.  It also signifies the past by once again the hollowness of the room.  

*Fact* After researching further on this image, this photo was taken from a video store training video that all of their workers had to watch in like the 80’s-90’s.

Aston Martin Ad

I came across this a while ago when I was on twitter, and it immediately caught my attention. It is an advertisement for pre-owned Aston Martin cars. Although it is gutsy and rather sexist, this is one of my favorite ads because of how effective it is. The caption says “You know you’re not the first, but do you really care?” Because of the image, is clearly aimed at the male population. I find it to be entirely effective because when one thinks of buying a new car (especially if you have enough money to buy an Aston Martin in the first place) they tend to really want a brand new one, never touched before. This advertisement redirects your thinking by pointing out that even though the car may be used it is still beautiful and stunning, just as this woman, although she has had past partners (implied), is still stunning. It makes a man think “I wouldn’t care if she had past partners, so why should I care if a beautiful Aston Martin has had past owners?” It is also effective because of how brazen it is. It will catch attention, and those who hate it will talk about it, as well as those who appreciated it. Either way the idea of pre-owned Aston Martins will reach the public.

Classical Lego Works of Art

Marco Pece is an artist that uses appropriation to put a new spin on old classical works of art and film. This image shown here is an appropriated image of the Mona Lisa. Marco uses lego piece to recreate famous works of art and scenes from movies. In an interview when asked why use legos Marco responded because it brings a sense of youth to a high culture and classical time. Pece stated “Everything flows from appropriating the world of art, to revitalizing and transforming its grandeur and pompous style in the simplicity and directness of the message.” Appropriation is taking a preexisting piece of art and using those aspects from that work to create another work of art that can be connected back to the original work. Since this image is compelling a more fun and playful approach at the Mona Lisa I would say that I think this is a sense of parody. Since this work of art is created with the use of lego pieces, there is an element of humor in this photo even though the Mona Lisa painting has been copied and appropriated on dozens of different occasions. Some people may think that since the Mona Lisa is to over done that this image exhibits more pastiche than parody, but ultimately like most things in the art world it us up to the viewer and what that spectator gains from reading concealed clues given by works of art.

Mass Media

ImageI came across this picture while searching the internet for mass media related images. I think that this is a very good picture when depicting mass media. This also shows the control that the mass media that is shown has on the youth especially. We see examples of photo-shopped images of women that young girls idealize. This type of editing ruins the minds of girls destroying their body image comparing themselves to women that are enhanced and fake. The picture shows a hand reaching out toward the baby as almost to seize control of the mind of the young. The baby is also placed right in front of the screen almost showing that it has no choice but to watch the mass media being shown and how edited and far from the truth most of it truly is. Depicting perfect people in perfect scenario.   

“Joking Bad”

            Recently we have been discussing the term parody and we have previously discussed the aspect of image icons in visual culture. The image above conveys both of these concepts. The image above is a parody by Jimmy Fallon because he is mimicking the AMC’s hit drama called Breaking Bad. Jimmy made an entire video short where he alters things from his famous night show and makes them fit into moments from Breaking Bad. While watching the video and then looking at this image I started to think deeper into what elements were really giving this image meaning as a parody. There have been many parodies made about Breaking Bad, but this one has been popular among the other parodies because Jimmy Fallon is a famous icon in our society. This image is using an icon to make fun of other icons and this gives a lot of viewers a greater sense of meaning. If the parody was done by someone that they were not familiar with I feel as though they wouldn’t take away as much meaning. A possible sense of meaning that viewers may have with the image is through ethos and pathos. Ethos because it is credible and pathos because right away it evokes emotions to the viewer because Jimmy Fallon is famous. Many viewers immediately have a good feeling from the image because Jimmy has established himself as a credible comedian who typically gives viewers good emotions. I realize that my argument may be far-fetched, but that was just my initial reaction when I thought past it being an obvious parody and analyzed the meaning that the image was conveying. 

Selfie

During our last class, all I could think about was this video. This music video of the song named “#Selfie” represents all that is negative about the selfie culture and what our generation may look like to others. This song mentions some of the dumbest remarks and shows an attractive, yet clearly unintelligent girl saying certain popular sayings. At the end of each verse, she says, “Let me take a selfie.” This video represents the selfie as a sort of joke. It makes fun of the culture and makes it seem like the unintelligent are the ones who are participating in such a culture. Yet, at the end of each verse, tons of photos show up of people’s selfies.
I think it is important to note the type of music that is playing during this song. At first, I thought it was possible one of the dumbest things I’ve seen on the internet, but after a while it was kind of catchy. It is very much a “top 100” kind of tune. This adds to the overall message of the song. It shows how this sort of selfie culture has become increasingly popular yet does not actually hold much value. The music is simply a beat and a girl speaking, not even singing. This is definitely a negative portrayal of the selfie and what it represents. The fact that so many people are shown and involved in the video simply makes me worry about our generation and the generation we will raise as parents.
